1. Rosli was jubilant when
he was declared the champion orchid grower in an international competition held
recently. He has been growing orchids for the past twenty years. However, it
was the first time he had taken part in a competition. It was indeed first-time
lucky for him. He won $3000 and a certificate. Excited over the win, he planned
to give his family members a big treat.
2. In correspondence
education, the adult students have to follow a planned schedule and program as
far as possible. They have to submit their assignments for marking by
experienced tutors who will offer comments and suggestions for improvement.
Very often the courses they take are in line with their profession.
3. The rapid increase in
population in major cities in the world has resulted in a number of social and
environmental problems. The high rate of growth is due mainly to migration
rather than natural increase. Most of the migrants are from rural areas and
smaller towns. they come to the cities to look for jobs. Many of them also come
to the cities to further their studies. as a city grows, the need for lousing and
public amenities also increase, resulting in various social and environmental
problems.
4. Due to rapid increase
in population in the cities, there are not enough houses. In actual fact, most
of the migrants cannot afford to buy or even rent a house. The lucky ones may
live with friends and relatives. Many of them resort to staying in squatter
areas which may lack the basic amenities like water and electricity. Diseases
are widespread and so are crimes.
5. Traffic offenders come
from all walks of life. They include teenagers, lorry drivers, professionals
and even ladies and senior citizens. Many of them are indifferent, impatient,
inconsiderate or immune to the traffic penalties which appear to be too
lenient. The lack of effective enforcement also contributes to the apathy of
the habitual traffic offenders.
